SLSC has set August 6-7 as the 2011 Mid Ontario Regatta weekend. We are known far and wide as fine regatta hosts and the 2011 Mids regatta provides us with another opportunity to extend a great Sturgeon Lake welcome to sailors of all ages from all over Ontario and elsewhere.
We will have 3 classes again this year – Laser, Radial and Club 420 – and the regatta will afford our sailors and their coaches the opportunity to race on our home waters with some of the best sailors from Ontario and the rest of Canada.
There is a feel to an SLSC regatta that has sailors coming back year after year. It is a feel that pervades from the arrival on Friday afternoon of the first sailors with their boats on trailers – it is feel that is created by the sight of tents populating our Village, by the excitement of our junior sailors, by the quiet beauty of our surroundings juxtaposed with the chaos of sailors and boats all packed into a small launch area, by the mixing of young kids and experienced great grand masters – all getting ready to sail in close quarters and then all racing together on one race course and by the communal meals that follow the racing, but above all else it is a feel that comes from the enthusiasm of our volunteers – an enthusiasm that takes our regattas to a different level.
We will of course be counting on volunteers again to welcome the sailors, to master the harbour, to provide the beds and the sites for tents, to prepare the breakfasts, to launch the boats, to organize the parking, to make the sandwiches, to cook the dinner, to serve as race committee, to man the safety boats, to take the photos, to tabulate the scoring, to tweet the on water play by play and to take on the miriad of other tasks that are involved in running a first class regatta.
Mark your calendars. It will be another great (and busy) SLSC weekend!
