A successful Civic regatta this past long weekend marked the halfway point of this summer’s amazing SLSC experience. But it’s definitely not back to school shopping time quite yet – there are still loads of time for more sailing!

July was a spectacular month, both on and off the water: our race teams had positive ventures onto other lakes (and even an ocean), we hosted over 200 people at our own Mid Ontario regatta, Wednesdays were full of fun themed events, delicious pizza and competitive evening sailing, Tuesday movie nights were lots of fun (although perhaps not always great movies), Friday dances were swingin’, and we figured out how to protect our club from invading raccoons! While we could perhaps have asked for more sun, we could not have asked for more wind – and isn’t that the element that sailors most desire? So all in all, we’re having a complete blast here at SLSC and are so happy that you are joining us for August (which will be even better!!! – if that’s even possible!).

Here are this week’s happenings and updates!

Civic Holiday Regatta

On Saturday, 12 420s, 5 Bytes, 5 Lasers, 4 Mosquitoes and 5 Handicapped boats gathered for the annual Civic Holiday Regatta – quite an impressive fleet. The weather was perfect with both high sun and high wind, the race committee was extremely well organized (if you don’t mind me saying…), the sailors were eager and the registration and lunch crews were on the ball. All in all, it was an excellent day.

And it was followed by another extraordinary sailing experience: the legendary Sunday Afternoon Parent and Child Race. It’s a pretty special thing to compete with one’s parent or child and we’re happy to report that overall it was a successful event.

Sunday night was wrapped up with a delicious dinner and Prize giving at Rosehill. Special thanks to Henrietta and Jeanne for their gourmet cooking!

Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to all those who participated and/or volunteered!

Other Regattas

Kate and Amy are currently competing at the Canadian Youth Championships in Victoria, B.C! Some pretty good results are coming in and all reports say they’re having a swell time. Keep up the good work ladies!

Our junior race team heads off for their 3rd out of town regatta this week. They’re going to the Cottage Club regatta on Stoney Lake on Wednesday. Make sure to wish them luck before they head off (not that they’ll need it!!).

Movie Night/Dance

Tuesday is movie night. Two movies will be shown in the Clubhouse: the first suitable for all ages and the second open to 13 year olds and up. The first movie begins at 6:30 and each movie costs a dollar. Please bring a reusable cup for juice.

And of course, Friday is DANCE TIME. Starts at 7 – bring a dollar for admission and another couple bucks for pop/freezies. We’re not sure yet what the theme will be – the Silvers will let you know early this week.

The Silvers organize both of these events – so they will provide all the details!!

(Remember, if you have any questions about this you can call the club @ 887-5110)

Wednesday Night Races

Wednesday Night Races continue this week. They have been absolutely gorgeous evening sails so far and have definitely become a highlight of the week. So take a break after club, eat some dinner and then head back at 6 p.m. for some early evening sailing. Experienced and non-experienced racers will be paired up.

Fun Day on Wednesday and Pizza Lunch

This Wednesday is FUN DAY! This week will be the Fruit Olympics! So dress up like an athlete and get ready to play football with a greased up watermelon!!

And to top it off: Wednesday is PIZZA LUNCH!!! Make sure your parents pay our wonderful Pizza Lady, Leslie, and enjoy a delicious lunch after sailing on Wednesday.

Water bottles and bring things.

Just a reminder: bring a water bottle to Sailing Club because we have a water cooler that you can refill with if needed. Help us help you stay hydrated!

Also, on top of a lifejacket and proper footwear, please bring warm clothing and rain gear if possible – because unless it’s reeeaally bad weather, we’re going sailing! Oh and bring your sunscreen, because summer is in full swing!
